After long-standing Aboriginal habitation, the island was sighted by Captain Cook in 1770, and became a popular destination for visitors in the 1970s and 1980s. It’s also a thriving community, with a population of around 1,000 permanent residents and an interesting history. Unlike many other islands in the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island is more than a popular tourist destination. It also boasts renowned bars and restaurants, a wide range of accommodation options, a huge selection of activities, and some striking contemporary landmarks, including the iconic Hamilton Island Yacht Club and Hamilton Island Golf Club. With its idyllic location in the heart of the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island is a perfect base for exploring the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach.
